Portland, January 11th, 2014. It’s coming your way, Lucia di Lammermoor will take the Keller Auditorium Stage on January 31st. The Opera is based on a true-life story from 17th-century Scotland, made famous in Walter Scott’s 1819 novel The Bride of Lammermoor. A romance blooms between Lucia and Edgardo, who are members of opposing sides in a feud between two noble families. Lucia’s brother Enrico convinces her that Edgardo has abandoned her and he forces her into a loveless marriage with his political ally Arturo. On the wedding night, Edgardo returns, still very much in love with Lucia, who goes mad as a result, fatally stabbing her new groom and dying herself soon afterwards. Donizetti’s score includes two of opera’s most famous compositions, the Act II sextet and Lucia’s mad scene, a 15-minute vocal thrill ride of Olympic proportions.
