A 40-year timeline
Providence Health Plan’s journey began in September 1984 with the formation of the Good Health Plan, later known as Providence Health Plan. This was the first HMO sponsored by the Sisters of Providence and laid the foundation for the current PHP.
Over the past four decades, PHP has transformed to meet the needs of its communities while keeping its Promise and Mission at the forefront. Some notable accomplishments include:
1990: Serving more than 150,000 members through 88 dedicated caregivers.
1997-1998: The birth of Providence Health Plan through a merger of The Good Health Plan of Oregon, The Good Health Plan of Washington, and SelectCare Health Plan.
2009-2010: Awarded the state-wide PPO contract for the State of Oregon Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB), growing by more than 110,000 members.
2012: Becoming a founding member and plan partner of Health Share of Oregon, the largest Medicaid organization in Oregon.
2014-2016: The only health plan offering Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage in all Oregon counties.
2022-2023: Expansion of Medicare Advantage coverage to Orange County California and Southeast Washington.
2023: Serving more than 660,000 members with over 1,400 caregivers and investing more than $1 million in communities through Health for All initiative.
2024: Celebrating 40 years of serving the community with high-quality, affordable, and accessible health coverage.
Mission Week
PHP’s Mission Week, held from September 23-27, honored the legacy of foundress Blessed Emilie Gamelin and the commitment of the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph to serve the vulnerable.
This year’s theme, “Rooted in Mission; Growing in Service,” reflected the organization’s ongoing dedication to making a positive impact in communities. Caregivers participated in various activities, including: Table of the King, a Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Build, a flu vaccine clinic, gardening and sorting with WISEPlace, a blood drive, and more.
These activities embodied PHP’s commitment to giving back to the community in tangible ways, reinforcing the organization’s mission-driven approach as it enters its fifth decade of service.
