5th Annual Children’s Cancer Association JoyRide Raises Money for Kids

5th Annual Children’s Cancer Association JoyRide Raises Money for Kids

Portland, June 21st, 2014. Nearly 100 motorcyclists rode their hogs, trikes and street bikes to support Children’s Cancer Association‘s Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin™. Mike and Cheryl Durbin, owners of Paradise Harley-Davidson and good friends to CCA, are founding sponsors of JoyRide and have been sponsors of the JoyRide all five years. The 5th annual JoyRide began at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel and traveled US-26 and State Highway 6 (the Wilson River Highway), a scenic stretch from Banks to Tillamook, with stops at Gales Creek Shell & Grocery and a finale party at the Caring Cabin in Pacific City, OR.

Bikers raised $28,000 to support CCA’s Caring Cabin, a 24-acre secluded retreat home in Pacific City, OR, that welcomes more than 500 family members with seriously ill children and teens each year.

Nearly 100 riders turned out for this Fifth Annual JoyRide. They are shown outside their final destination, the Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin in Pacific City, OR.

CCA Co-founder Cliff Ellis shared, “The CCA JoyRide is a dream come true for me. Five years ago, I envisioned a bunch of bikes rolling up to the Caring Cabin in celebration of a fun ride – with the added bonus of raising funds for this amazing retreat home for families with seriously ill kids. In this, our Fifth Annual JoyRide, we have now raised more than $125,000.”

Before the ride began children, families and nurses at Randall Children’s Hospital met riders and checked out their motorcycles.

Matthew, an 11-year-old cancer survivor and visitor of the Caring Cabin, cut the purple ribbon kicking-off the ride. Matthew’s mother thanked the riders and said, “From the moment we arrived, you could feel all the love and emotion radiating from the Cabin; it was magical. I hadn’t seen the kids smile and laugh like that in so long, especially Matty. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We thank CCA and all of you for supporting this wonderful organization from the bottom of our hearts.”

From the Children’s Cancer Association:

The Children’s Cancer Association didn’t start with a foundation, it started with a family. One who faced its own battle with serious pediatric illness almost two decades ago in Portland, OR. From that experience came a passionate commitment and focus: To deliver the resources, the friendship, and the healing power of music to families facing the same challenges.

Unlike many organizations dedicated to the worthy goal of someday finding a cure for cancer, CCA is all about today. We specialize on the moment, delivering immediate help to kids and teens facing life-threatening illness. When seriously ill children and their families need more than medicine, CCA’s innovative programs create joy one moment at a time.

Randall Children’s Hospital is one of Oregon’s largest providers of pediatric inpatient and trauma services and opened its new home in February 2012. Randall Children’s Hospital has a medical staff of more than 600 physicians, including pediatric medical and surgical specialists, sub-specialists, and community pediatricians. Randall Children’s Hospital has received more than 100,000 patient visits per year. Our children’s emergency department is Oregon’s busiest, with 22,000 visits annually.

BedMart Mattress Superstores Donates 206 Mattresses to Shelter Network

Portland, June 25th, 2014. BedMart announced their third annual Tempur-Pedic donation was a hit. The company donated 206 mattresses to eight nonprofit organizations that provide transitional housing in the Portland area. The mattresses will outfit temporary residence for people experiencing homelessness. Donations of 10 to 35 mattresses were made to Central City Concern, Macdonald Center, New Avenues for Youth, Janus Youth Programs, Portland Rescue Mission, Transition Projects, Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest, and Luke-Dorf. All organizations share a connection beyond their transitional housing missions, as they all provide comprehensive support services that help individuals, families, and children.

The Association raised more than $328,000 at the event in support of its mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Parklandians Unite Celebration Draws History and Park Lovers

Parklandians Unite Celebration Draws History and Park Lovers

Portland, June 9th, 2014. Over 120 leaders from various park-supporting organizations joined together for the first-ever “Parklandians Unite” event, held at the Oregon Historical Society and co-hosted by the nonprofit Portland Parks Foundation and parks bureau. These groups volunteer nearly a half million hours for parks each year, and raise over $150,000 annually for free park concerts and movies. According to Parks Foundation director, Nick Hardigg, “We wanted to bring these generous people together, at the Historical Society, to thank them not only for what they do each year, but to recognize their historic impact on parks. After all, this group has been the impetus behind every dollar ever spent on parks—every purchase of park land, every playground ever built. That’s worth celebrating.”

Abigail Pasion (Roosevelt High School, Portland, OR) and Morgan Baker (R.A. Long High School, Longview, WA) were each awarded $4,000 Comcast Founder’s scholarships which brought their total scholarships to $5,000 each. Jazmin Cruz (South Salem High School, Salem, OR) was awarded a $9,000 Comcast Founder’s Scholarship which brought her scholarship total to $10,000.

Abigail Pasion from Roosevelt High School has been involved in several activities including student government, theatre, and SUN Community Schools. After working with Global Citizens Corps in 2012, Abigail created the program RISE: Reaching Individual Success through Education. It is a peer-run group designed to increase and sustain the percentage of college-bound youth in the St. Johns area of Portland.

Honored students and guests heard from Rodrigo Lopez, Comcast Oregon & SW Washington regional vice president; Mark Lewis, director of STEM for the Oregon Education Investment Board; and Vanessa Dominguez, 2013 Comcast Founders’ scholarship recipient and Oregon State University undergraduate student.

Recognizing the exceptional academic commitment and community involvement of the students, Rodrigo Lopez joked, “I’d be embarrassed to tell you my community involvement when I was your age.” Mark Lewis commended their leadership and role-modeling in school, noting that “education is a collective responsibility.” Vanessa Dominguez reminded students, “when the going gets tough, just keep on swimming.” Citing her continued community involvement as youth director of Momentum Alliance, she encouraged students to keep up with community service despite possible challenges in adjusting to college life.

“These students are great leaders. They will surely continue to make change happen in their schools and communities by their own actions and the examples they set for their peers,” remarked Rodrigo Lopez.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.

To date, Comcast has awarded more than $21.6 million to nearly 21,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.

As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $568 million in scientific research in 17 countries. In 2012 alone, JDRF provided more than $110 million to T1D research.
