Mt. Hood, August 26th. The 31st Annual Hood to Coast raised over $610,000 to help in the fight cancer. It was $60,000 more than organizers set as a goal to benefit the American Cancer Society. The 199 mile 2012 Hood to Coast Relay, described by organizers as the largest in the world, included 12,600 runners and 3,600 volunteers over the August 24th – 25th weekend.

Tokyo University Team won the race by finishing the 199 miles in 17:14:37. The six member team averaged 5:11 minutes per mile. Here’s a list of the top ten finishers.

Dayton, OR. August 18th. It was an elegant evening at Stoller Vineyards with dinner prepared by award-winning chefs and all proceeds benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest to support life-changing friendships. The event was called “Perfect Pairings” and special thanks went to David Anderson, Genoa; Sunny Jin, Jory; Daniel Mondok, Paulee; and Trent Pierce, Wafu who gave their time and talent.
Big Brothers Big Sisters recognized Nike as its 2011 Corporate Partner of the Year. The award was received by Tim Hershey, Big Brothers Big Sisters board member and Nike Vice President and General Manager, Direct to Consumer North America.
Big Brothers Big Sisters also honored Robert Kessi, 2011 Big Brother of the Year; Julia Marrocco, 2012 Big Sister of the Year; and Ryan Shaw, 2012 Big Brother of the Year. Robert Kessi has been matched with Little Brother Juwan for 10 years.

Portland, August 4th. Over 50 literary agents and Hollywood film managers were in Portland looking for the next breakthrough talent at the 43rd annual Willamette Writers Conference. Ruth Witteried, the film coordinator for the conference recruited among others: Grace Ledding from Agile Entertainment, Alex Budzinski from Stage Coach Entertainment and Jacqueline Gault from Jackal Films. The conference was August 3-5th at the Portland Airport Sheraton Hotel and attracted 850 people.

The conference offered over 100 workshops, panels, speeches, and a chance for pitching manuscripts.
According to a fact sheet distributed with the welcome packets, “Usually about 25 people acquire an agent to represent them, and three to six get published or have a script optioned at each conference.”

Portland, August 8th. The Beach Boy grabbed Marilyn’s wig and ran! It was all part of Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) and Peacock Productions first ever Bat ‘n Rouge softball tournament featuring drag queens, music, and general hilarity at Lillis-Albina Park. The benefit raised $10,600 to send HIV infected and affected kids to Camp Starlight and build scholarships for the Audria M. Edwards Scholarship Fund.
Portland’s legendary Entertainer, Darcelle threw out the first pitch.
The Queen of Drag, Darcelle XV, added, “How could the Queen of Portland not be at an event like this? It marries all the things I love: Camp Starlight, LGBT Youth and Higher Education, drag performance, and hot men. I’m delighted to attend the first Bat ‘n Rouge event.”
