Portland, OR. Dogs of all sizes, ages and breeds are invited to put their best paw forward to be honored as 2018 Portland Rose Festival Grand Marshal or serve on the Canine Court. In recognition of the role that the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) a has played making Oregon one of the most pet friendly states in the nation, the Rose Festival will — for the very first time — feature a Canine Grand Marshal in the Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, June 9th. The Grand Marshall could be a Corgi like one of those who helped raise money for OHS at special Corgi Beach Party.
Selected as the Portland Rose Festival‘s Official Charity for the 2018 season, OHS is joining forces with the Rose Festival to find Portland’s canine royalty and they’re asking for the public’s help. Five dogs will be honored as the official Canine Court, including one lucky dog being crowned Canine Grand Marshal. Information and applications are available on the OHS website and at all LexiDog locations. There is a $50 fee to apply which is a donation to OHS.
The Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade is the crown jewel of the annual Rose Festival. The Brilliant Oasis float took top honors in 2017 parade.
The parade draws hundreds of thousands of cheering viewers of every age, along a 4.2 mile route that winds through city streets and across the river. It features over a dozen full-size all-floral floats, all-floral mini-floats, marching bands, and equestrian units.
“It’s wonderful to be able to partner with one of Oregon’s most tenured nonprofits, one that’s been a part to the community even longer than the Rose Festival,” says Marilyn Clint, Rose Festival Chief Operations Officer.

Here’s more information on the program:
75 years ago, our nation was at war. As hundreds of thousands of men across our nation answered the call to serve and protect our freedoms, hundreds of thousands of women on the home front volunteered to support them in our factories, building ships, planes and armament, to support them. They become known as “Rosie the Riveters” and we are here today to honor those amazing women.
In 2010, Congress passed a resolution establishing the second Sunday of August as “Spirit of ’45 Day” to honor all those who served in WWII both those who defended our freedoms on the battle field and also honor those who were there on the home front, to support our troops on the front lines.
This year 2018, Congress passed a resolution establishing March 21, ‘Rosie the Riveter’ Day as part of Women History Month. Over 50 dedications and plantings are occurring in 21 states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Texas and the District of Columbia.
Oregon is a model in the country with 12 sites with at least one in each of our state’s congressional districts. These gardens are part of a National effort to create a network of “Living Memorial” rose garden across America. Working with WEEKS ROSES, the National Spirit of ’45 Organization was delighted to announce this unique rose this past January and Congress was equally pleased to swift to endorse March 21 as ‘Rosie the Riveter Day.’
These gardens in full bloom this spring, summer and fall seasons will help us to remember, honor and always be inspired by their example of courage, shared-sacrifice, ‘can-do’ attitude, spirit, unity and service.

The Rose Festival, in partnership with the Portland Marathon, extends a big thank you to Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle and the great City of Beaverton, including the Beaverton Police, Beaverton School District, and Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District for their tremendous support of this sunny Sunday morning race. The Rose Festival Half Marathon is also supported by Kuni Lexus of Portland, Crunch Fitness, The Oregonian, FOX12, Alpha Media, and Nike.
The Portland Rose Festival is one of the first signs of summer. People come from far and wide to revel in the variety of culturally rich events happening during the months of May and June. Whether you are craving cotton candy and a spin on the CityFair Ferris wheel, want to dance your cares away at a RoZone Concert, or bask in the sun as amazing, all-floral floats drift through downtown in the Grand Floral Parade, there is an event for festival lovers of any age.
Portland, OR. The Portland Rose Festival Foundation has named The Bloom Project its official charity for 2017. The Bloom Project is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that offers comfort during a challenging time in a person’s life. “Our respective missions and activities align so perfectly and offer many opportunities to work together this spring and summer,” says Marilyn Clint, Rose Festival Chief Operating Officer. “We see a lot of synergy between our organizations and we look forward to planning some new mission-based projects this season.”
The Bloom Project receives each of its flowers from donations provided by wholesale floral companies, growers and local grocery stores.
Volunteers repurpose the flowers to create beautiful bouquets, ready to deliver to local hospice and palliative care patients. In the organization’s 10 years, it has distributed more than 165,000 bouquets, with nearly 70,000 donated volunteer hours.
“We’re thrilled to be selected as the official charity partner of the Portland Rose Festival,” said Heidi Berkman, founder and president of The Bloom Project. “Our two organizations share a common mission of continually giving back to those in need, and we sincerely hope this partnership will bring tremendous visibility and awareness to the power of flowers.”
On average, the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade uses 71,000 stems of flowers. As part of this partnership, Berkman and her team of volunteers will look to help the Portland Rose Festival repurpose many of the flowers as gifts for selected organizations.
The flowers are re-purposed to create bouquets, designed and delivered by volunteers to local hospice and palliative care organizations. Hospice nursing staff, clergy, social workers, and volunteers deliver bouquets to patients in their home or care facility.
About The Bloom Project
Founded in 2007 by Heidi Berkman, The Bloom Project is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that provides fresh floral bouquets to hospice and palliative care patients. The Bloom Project receives each of its flowers as donations provided by wholesale floral companies, growers and local grocery stores. The flowers are repurposed by volunteers into beautiful bouquets ready to deliver to local hospice and palliative care patients. Volunteers come from all different backgrounds; many are retired or have little to no floral experience.
Members of the team with floral design experience host training sessions, teaching new volunteers how to: care for the flowers, identify which flowers to keep and how to create a bouquet. Berkman and her team of volunteers are committed to sustainable business practices. Not only are they eco-friendly in their efforts to repurpose flowers from their partners, but also by composting floral waste. For more information, please visit: http://thebloomproject.org.
