Portland, December 6th, 2014. The Spinners, Illusionist Hart Keene from America’s Got Talent, Erik Swartz from Laff Factory in Los Angeles, and The Brown Sisters from Portland packed the Oregon Convention Center Ballroom for community leader Roy Jay’s annual “Spam and Velvetta” Holiday party. Audience members were encouraged to donate to various local charities. Roy Jay’s nonprofit also gave away use of a Toyota for a year, along with other prizes to say “Thank You” for support.

New Portland Police Chief Larry O’Dea and wife Kay were among the 750+ people attending the Roy Jay annual “Spam and Velveeta” holiday event.

Marcia and George Hocker bought their tickets months before the event and got some of the best seats in the house. “Portland needs more first class events like this” says George. “Thanks Roy Jay for what you do for our communities”
The Spinners were a big hit with the crowd.
The event also recognized returning veterans and their families. Complimentary seating provided by KBNP Radio, Enterprise Holdings, TradeYa, Inc and Roy Jay Enterprises. Thanks to Roy Jay’s partners and members of the African American Chamber, the event encouraged the audience to donate to local nonprofits such as Lines for Life, M.I.K.E. Program, Highland’s Haven and Project Clean Slate.
Grand prizes this year included a 2014 Toyota Prius, Portland Trailblazer courtside seats, color televisions and much more. The 750+ guests enjoyed a nonstop professionally produced event that has become the “must attend” event of the holiday season. Jay says that his Las Vegas and Portland staffers are already working on a list of potential 2015 performers that are on the short list including Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Kool and The Gang and The Pointer Sisters.

Holiday Host, Roy Jay gave away prizes to the audience including Mexican vacations, televisions and more. The event had gross revenues of $267,000.

What started out as a holiday fundraiser at Roy Jay’s hilltop east county home has evolved into a full-scale benefit.

The evening raised funds for Project Clean Slate, an award-winning community program which has helped over 8,000 individuals overcome the stigma of a police record and become productive citizens.
Supporters included Portland City Council members, Amanda Fritz and Nick Fish, Scott Dunn of Birkeshire Hathaway, Judges from Multnomah County, District Attorney, Chief of Police, County Sheriff , and US Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici.
Through joint community efforts of the African American Chamber of Commerce, Multnomah County District Attorneys Office, Multnomah County Public Defenders office, Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles, Independent Development Enterprise Alliance and the Alliance of Minority Chambers of Commerce we have been able to provide this service to the community.

Portland, February 8th, 2013. The VIP preview of “Quartet” drew dozens of Portland’s movers and shakers. The new restaurant will open on Valentine’s Day. It features an upscale menu offering Pacific Northwest cuisine with a Southern influence. Portland restaurateur Frank Taylor says of his new waterfront venture, “Quartet is a combination of hospitality, cuisine, music and lively, friendly ambiance.”

Roy Jay, President of the African American Chamber of Commerce and principal in several Portland hospitality-related businesses, is one of the backers. He’s pictured with Juanita Walton. Quartet is owned and managed by Keeler Hospitality Restaurant Group.
The establishment’s first fundraising preview party will take place on February 13th and benefit Self Enhancement, Inc., the a local non-profit helping at-risk youth.
Situated in a single-story standalone building 10 feet from the Willamette, Quartet retained much of Lucier’s interior design including, African hardwoods, a water channel which snakes around the dining room and dramatic bronze tube chandeliers. (Lucier held Oregon’s only AAA four-star rating at the time, but closed in 2008.)

While much of the Lucier decor remains, new additions include a grand piano for performers and a pared-down bar to take advantage of the river view.

The Quartet staff is gearing up for the February 14th opening.
Menu items will include table-side Caesar service, truffled lobster mac & cheese and other Seafood entrees which range from $33 to $55. Quartet will be open for dinner seven days a week and is located at 1910 S.W. River Drive.
Portland, December 14th. Nearly 1,000 people packed the Oregon Convention Center to raise money for seven different local nonprofits including the United Way and Project Clean Slate. The benefit, which raised over $250,000, was organized by civic leader, Roy Jay. He explained the “Spam and Velveeta Holiday Event” title saying, “It reminds me of my upbringing as our family had to dine on Spam and Velveeta during my formative years. It also keeps me grounded to never forget where I come from.”

Beneficiary, Project Clean Slate, is a program presented by the African American Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with numerous community business, social service and government partners. It helps people clear up decades of delinquent and uncollected fines and penalties so they can live productive lives. Local law enforcement officials support the groundbreaking program.

“If it is a Roy Jay event, you know that many people in Portland will be there” said David Saltzman Vice President of Bank of the West who was one of the major supporting sponsors.
Highlights of the evening included a tearful story from Melanie Powell who went from homeless to hopeful thanks to Project Clean Slate, the African American Chamber of Commerce and other local agencies and business entrepreneurs. Today she is not only gainfully employed at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, but also a 4.0 student at Oregon Health Sciences University.
Toyota Dealers of Portland teamed up with Roy to give away a Toyota Prius 2. The $50 per ticket raffle yielded a winner, Janelle Brown who purchased only one ticket from a representative of Delta Sigma Theta, one of nonprofit recipients of ticket sales that evening.
In past years, Jay held the event at his east Portland home but this year had to move to the Oregon Convention Center because the invitation list went from 250 to over 700 friends, associates, colleagues and business partners.
Jay and his staff are already looking forward to 2013. Nonprofit organizations which want to benefit should contact the African American Chamber eight months in advance to be considered.

Former Oregon State Senator Margaret Carter, who serves as director of Community Engagement with Oregon Health & Human Services, and Bobbie Dore Foster, executive director of The Skanner News and member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Board of Directors, joined in the fun during the festive evening.
MIKE is an acronym for: Multicultural Integrated Kidney Education. The program works to fight chronic disease conditions which harm kidneys including obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. These health issues are are increasingly impacting our children, especially low income and minority children.
Supporters work to empower more youth to be health leaders to counter chronic diseases of diabetes, high blood pressure . They explain that By 2020, Medicare expenses for kidney failure in the U.S. are expected to reach $54 billion.
Annually, MIKE Program empowers over 160 diverse youth in the Portland Metro Area to be ambassadors of health. MIKE Program recruits and trains caring adults to match with the youth on a 1:4 ratio, supporting them in the teens’ educational and experiential environments. The customized curriculum meets national health promotion and career related learning standards, as the teens develop individualized health promotion projects for their communities. MIKE Program provides critical interventions to the dire health consequences of poor nutrition, physical inactivity, risky behaviors, and poor access to health care.
